It's a new year, Dickheads, and that means new opportunities to reach out to those fellow zombie dickheads out there in this beautifully rotten country of ours and bring them into the fold. First up is the brand-new Image Comics Expo in Oakland, CA, Feb. 24-26. It's going to be an amazing collection of Image Comics talent, both original and new recipes. I'm going to have copies of the Zombie Dickheads one-shot along with a brand-new exclusive signed and numbered print you can only get at the show. Here's a sneak peek:

And that's not all. I'm planning on having exclusive prints for as many of the shows that I can. It's the least I can do in-between working on the next issue of Dickheads, which is coming as soon as I can finish up new freelance projects. Stay tuned!

So this was pretty cool: Chris Eline and his son Cullen came by the table to get a sketch of Cullen as a zombie.

Cullen liked his sketch so much that he ran over to a group of face painters that were set up at the show (forgive me, but I can't find your names. Please send me your info if you see this!) and had them paint him up to look like the sketch!

Then he entered the convention's costume/makeup contest and won! Did I ask him to split the winnings with me? No. 'Cause I'm a classy dude.

Well, 2011 was a real doozy! Economic woes, political upheavals throughout the globe, natural disasters, looming catastrophes in internet censorship and civil liberties -- at least we can all look forward to 2012, where we'll all get blown to bits in the upcoming apocalypse!

But just because the world's going to hell in a Gucci handbag, that doesn't mean folks are giving up on a time-honored New Year's tradition: resolutions! I recently asked the Zombie Dickheads about theirs, and here's what they had to say.

DENNIS
"This year, I resolve to be a bit more tolerant of my housemates. Their lack of hygiene and consideration for others, not to mention the name-calling -- I need to understand that they can't help the rude, obnoxious, poorly-raised individuals they are, the causes of which are largely societal. A dash of half-hearted empathy, a pinch of condescension, and a heaping handful of pity for those around me are my recipe for a more tolerant new year!"

COLTON
"Resolutions are for deluded idiots who think the key to living better is by lying to yourself that you're in control of how your life turns out. Look at me! You think I planned to look like a Jack O'Lantern all year 'round? Or to be stuck with this pack of fucktards? Maybe I could give up chocolate for a year, or take that spin class I've been putting off, but it won't change the fact that life sucks, and it's only getting worse with each rotation of this miserable ball of shit we all live on."

JOSH
"I resolve to keep being awesome. I've spent my entire life, and most of this afterlife, maintaining a steady regiment of sitting around, working towards nothing, and basically not giving a shit, and it's worked out pretty great so far. Sure, there are some that say we're living in a hell on earth, but I say lower your standards and you'll see it's a wonderful life after all."

"I resolve to put myself out there more -- go out, try and meet people. I tend to live a pretty sheltered life, and my social life is, like, up and died, y'know? I've just gotta get some new friends. Don't get me wrong, these guys are, well, these guys. I just want to maybe know some... better people, I guess? Does that make me sound like a bitch?"

Thanks, Dickheads! As for yours truly, I resolve to get cracking to bring you more Zombie Dickheads goodness, and those plans are already well under way. Expect to see a buttload more news from our favorite band of hipster deadheads coming soon!

Zombie Dickheads storm NC Comicon. News at 11.

Greetings, Dickheads! Here's another tale of convention madness -- this time at the NC Comicon in Chapel Hill, NC! I was there spreading the good zombie word, and I was joined by my cohorts at Lost Story Studios in their promotion of our new horror anthology, DeathCurse, which was a con-exclusive comic produced by Ultimate Comics, the sponsors of the show.

It's a pretty sweet book, a combo of Tales from the Crypt-style horror, and 80's VHS schlock. Definitely contact the store and see about getting your ass a copy. Or hit me up at my next show. I'll have my own copies for sale.

In addition to drawing a story inside, I designed the book and did the cover. Made that bitch look like an old VHS box!

The show was a blast! Had a great time hanging with old friends, and making new ones. Made a bunch of new Zombie Dickheads fans, and did a few more zombie portraits, too!

Did this one of little dude Kent. Couldn't bring myself to
call a kid a "Dickhead", even if it's a term of endearment.

I did one other sketch, but I forgot to take a picture (I did do a lot of drinking that weekend...), so if you're out there, missing Zombie Dickhead, and you can send me a photo, I'll put it up!

I also did a watercolor sketch of Lisa for collector Kevin Chen. Kevin had a pretty impressive sketchbook where he just asked artists to do whatever they felt like, and I asked if he wanted one of the Dickheads. He said go right ahead. He even hung out as I worked, and he took photos as we chatted.

It was a really interesting look and style of a character I've gotten used to drawing one way. Got me thinking about how it might look to do all the characters in this style. Stay tuned on that.

So, all in all, it was a great show. Thanks to Alan Gill and the rest of the crew at Ultimate Comics for hosting a kickass con, all the fans for coming out to say "hi" and get books and sketches, and to Big Daddy Brockton McKinney for letting me crash at his pad, and for throwing the mother of all BBQ's for our own little DeathCurse wrap party. Next show up is The Great Allentown Comic Con in Allentown, PA, Nov. 19 & 20. Come at me, bros (and lady-bros)!

The Dickheads convention train keeps a-rolling, folks, and one of my favorite things is doing zombie portraits of people in the back of the book. Here is a sampling of the ones I did at ZomBcon and Long Beach Comic Con. I present to you some brand-new Zombie Dickheads!

D-E-A-D!

Man, oh, man! What a wild time at Seattle's ZomBcon this past weekend! The Dickheads made their big debut, and people really embraced them as their own.
People really liked the book. I had plenty of people who bought it earlier in the weekend come back to tell me they loved it. Folks really liked the exclusive print, too. There are a few of them left. If you want one, hit me up at zombidickheads@gmail.com to see their availability.

Zombie fans are some of the most hardcore subgenre fans around. There were plenty of people done up in all kinds of creative zombie makeups. Going zombie is a great way to get some mileage out of your other costumes. Cosplayed as Super Mario Bros. for Comic-con? Now you can be Super Zombio Bros.!

Zombie Dickheads ARE coming to Seattle's ZomBcon!

Things are in a bit of a scramble here at the Safe House, as we get ready to head up to Seattle for ZomBcon, the West Coast's biggest zombie convention. We're all very excited to bring the Dickheads out to the undead masses. In addition to copies of the one-shot, we're going to have at the table an exclusive, limited-edition print of the Dickheads trying to blend in with the Seattle zombie crowd. It's a small run of 50 prints, which'll be signed and numbered, so act fast while supplies last. Check it out here:

Also, just wanted to thank everyone that's ordered books so far. Orders are shipping with new ones on the way. There have been people asking about spreading the word to their local retailers, and I'm going to start putting together flyers and retailer packs that I'll have here on the site that can be printed out and distributed if you'd like. Zombie Dickheads Crash Nashville Comics & Horror Fest!

Hey there, Dickheads! Just got back from the Nashville Comics and Horror Fest, and I'm still reeling from a whirlwind of emotions. Going into the show, I was a little bummed since, due to a printing error, I didn't have any copies of the Zombie Dickheads one-shot for the show. Add to this the fact that people were asking about it, and/or were sold on the concept from the title alone, and I had nothing to sell them. Add to THAT the fact that the Nashville crowd was hungry for all things zombie (seriously, every other word heard at the show was "zombie".) So, I was in a bit of a funk. I felt as if I had let the people down. That is, until I saw two very familiar faces making their way through the crowd towards my table...

I was shocked! Speechless! And a little thirsty (unrelated.) Was I hallucinating? Had my despondency over not being able to give the people what they want manifested itself in a full-on delusional episode? Nope! It was just Zombie Dickheads super-fans Victoria Clark and Monty Valentine cosplaying as Lisa and Dennis! I was bowled over, I was beside myself, and still a little thirsty. These fine folks took it upon themselves to spread the love of all things Dickheaded by going all out. I have never, EVER, had anyone cosplay as one of my characters. I have had someone cosplay as one of my drawings of someone else's characters ('sup, Heather!), but it's always been a dream of mine that something I created take hold of a fan's imagination so much that they perform the ultimate flattery and dress up like my creations, and here they were -- and the book hadn't even come out yet! BANG! ZOOM! I was over the moon! I could barely contain myself. I started asking all sorts of questions about how they put it all together -- I probably freaked them out a bit, watching this wide-eyed, babbling idiot poking and prodding them for information. They said they knew I was going to be here, and they had thrown it all together the night before from bits and pieces of makeup and costume they already had (a pretty amazing feat, if you ask me.)

They also came in search of books, of which I had none, but I did have a mailing list at the table for interested parties and took their emails down. They were good sports about it and Monty picked up a collection of Sidekick books instead. We took some pictures together, and then we said our goodbyes. Even after they left, I was still riding high on that wave of goodwill they rode in on. I couldn't stop talking about it all day.

Imagine my surprise when the next day of the show, Monty and Victoria showed up again, this time out of costume. Monty said they were so nervous they forgot to buy some Dickheads prints! So they came by to pick up some more merch. And the biggest surprise was yet to come! Monty handed me a drawing -- the first Zombie Dickheads fanart!

We grabbed a few more pics, chatted some more, and then said some more goodbyes -- this time with hugs.

Overall, what a weekend! The Nashville horror and comics crowd was super cool, and people seemed to really take a liking to Zombie Dickheads. Many thanks to everyone who came by, and also to Marc Ballard and the rest of the Comics and Horror Fest crew for taking excellent care of me. And super-special thanks to Victoria and Monty! Next time I'll have books, I promise!

Good News, Bad News

Ok, Dickheads, there's good news and bad news. First, the bad news: Due to a binding error, all of the Zombie Dickheads one-shots have been bound backwards. The good news? The backwards books look fantastic.

Unfortunately, this means that I'm not going to have books for the Nashville Comics and Horror Fest this weekend. But I will have a mailing list ready, so everyone that was planning on buying a book this weekend, come by and drop me your info, and I can make sure you get one when they go on sale on the website.

Sorry, folks. But rest easy, knowing that those responsible have been brought to justice.

The word is out on the street, the internet, uh, street, about Zombie Dickheads! Check out the Press page for archived news and mentions. Since some of these have the same info, and you're all such busy people, here's a brief rundown:

Yesterday, both FEARnet and Shock Till You Drop posted the press releases, and That F'ing Monkey embedded the 8-page preview.

Today, Comic Monsters put up an interview with yours truly containing the preview, and Geekscape posted a very nice review of the preview. Chris Arrant makes mention at Robot 6 about the book, as well.

Also today, my appearance with Chris Taber on Mike Norton and Chris Crank's Crankcast is up on their site.

OH YEAAAAAAWWWW! * air guitar * WEOO WEOOOOOWWW!

It's been about two months of hard work, long sleepless nights, and I look more and more like Christian Bale in the Machinist, but the debut Zombie Dickheads one-shot is complete!

So you're probably saying, "Oh, good for you! You've finished the book, but what does that have to do with me? When do I get my hands on one of these bad boys?"

Well, tough shit, I'm not gonna tell you.

Just kidding! Had you going there for a second, huh? Sorry, I'm still a little punchy. Ok, so the first printing is a numbered limited edition of 500 that I'll have available at the rest of this year's shows, beginning with the Nashville Horror and Comics Fest, Oct. 1 & 2. Check the Appearances page for info on where else I'll be appearing. I'm also going to set up an online store here at the website where you can purchase copies of the book. If that first run sells out, then we'll be talking about second printings and all that jazz. But shambling baby zombie steps, people. Initially, the only place to get your hands on a copy will be at the shows.

The books are $10 US, for 48-pages of dickish zombie goodness. $30 will get you the book along with an original custom sketch of you as a Zombie Dickhead in the back of the book.

I'm so psyched that this book is finally coming out. It's been a while since I've had some creator-owned stuff out there. I'm having a blast, and I can't wait to share it with you guys.

Zombie Dickheads pinup by Zees Moreno

Up on Zees' blog is the final to his Zombie Cola pinup for the one-shot! As I've mentioned here before, Zombie Cola was an original concept Zees had way back when that is totally in the vein (pun intended) of Zombie Dickheads.

When I was putting the one-shot, and I asked him if he wanted to do a pinup, he was totally inspired to dust off Andy the zombie, and I couldn't be happier. I think there's definite crossover potential. Stay tuned for more on that.

Hoo boy! It's been a flurry of activity here at the Safe House, Dickheads. Some updates!

Just finished colors on the last of the interior pages for the brand-new 24-page Dickheads adventure, "28 Minutes Later". Now I'm on to the cover! Here's a sneak peek at the inks!

I wanted something bold and in-your-face to contrast with the action-less nature of the characters. Kind of passive-aggressive -- just like the Dickheads! Fun Fact: the composition of the piece is based off of the poster for The Lost Boys. Now, Josh is no Jason Patric, but Jason Patric wouldn't look so hot with half of his face ripped off, would he?

Also, the pinups keep rolling in. Here's a WIP on a pinup from my good pal Rob Reilly, the creator of the upcoming comic mini-series, "A.K.A."! Here, Rob envisions Josh feeling a bit nostalgic about when he used to eat food of any kind. I like to call this piece, "In Memory of Meat".

We're fast approaching the first show on the Zombie Dickheads Fall tour, Nashville Comic and Horror Fest! I've been burning the midnight oil, as well at the morning, noon and evening oil getting the book together. After the cover comes lettering and book layout. I've got an IV hooked up for meals so I don't have to leave the old workstation, so I think I'm good!

Dickheads progress: The Quickening

Well, Dickheads, the art is almost complete for the one-shot, and pinups are rolling in. Here's a work-in-progress from my very talented brother-from-the-same-mother, Zees! He was inspired by Zombie Dickheads to bring back his long-lost comic Zombie Cola. Could a crossover be far behind?

There's also some more big news on the way, but it's still too soon to tell. I will say that it's got everyone here at the safe house very excited. And you folks'll be the first to know!

Zombie Dickheads - SDCC mentions

For those unaware, San Diego Comic-Con, one of the largest comic conventions in the country, dare I say the world, was a few weeks back. I was lucky enough to be set up in Artists' Alley, as I have for the past 6 or so years. Now, I know what you're thinking, when's the last time anyone got anything good in an alley, besides smack? But Artists' Alley is a great place at a comic con to meet all of the folks that create the comic books that they then turn into your favorite movies and video games. Where are we? In the alley.

This year, Artists' Alley was sponsored by deviantART, which is one of my favorite sites devoted to artists of all types. They had two large jumbotron screens showcasing our art, as well as a computer setup with Wacom tablets where we could do some live drawing. It was a pretty sweet setup.

So, anyway, I was on-hand in the Alley, promoting Zombie Dickheads, pressing the flesh (pun intended), doing sketches, and what-not, and I was approached by the fine folks at fearNET to talk about my new book. I like their site and network a whole lot, and they like me, so that's pretty great.

I also got a sweet mention (along with one silly-ass photo of me) from Scott De Las Casas over at boingboing! I'm very excited to spread the infected word about my favorite band of zombie hipsters. Anyone else wants to talk dickheads, feel free to drop me a line.

Welcome to the home of the ZOMBIE DICKHEADS -- a comedic look at the undead apocalypse from the point of view of four dysfunctional zombies who don't eat human flesh, as they attempt to find a place of their own in a world where they don't fit in amongst other zombies, humans, and each other.

The Dickheads first appeared in the Zombie Bomb Vol. 4: Dark Daze from Terminal Press. A 48-page one-shot is on its way in Oct., to be sold at this year's conventions, with digital download to follow soon after. The one-shot will reprint the original Zombie Bomb story with an all-new 24-page story and pinups by some of my favorite comics artists.

I'll be making announcements here -- works in progress, press, and convention appearances -- all the dickhead news that's fit to print. But you'll have to check it out here, folks, because Zombie Dickheads are NOT coming to get you.

They have better shit to do.
